I’m back from 10 days down south where the weather varied from snow to 600m (at which level we were staying!) to beautifully warm spring days. Sounds like New Zealand weather! Thanks to all who picked up extras in my absence.
Exciting times in Australia with a yes vote for same sex marriage! Hope the politicians will follow through quickly.
Margaret Mayman has been heavily involved in the campaign and we rejoice with her and all the ‘Yes’ campaigners.
Just before I left the SATRS seminar on Courage to Act was extremely well attended. (A full Hall on Friday night). We enjoyed a delightful mix of personalities and theologies from our own Sir Lloyd Geering (50 years on from his acquittal from heresy), and from the husband and wife pairing of Prof Hal Taussig and Rev Dr Susan Cole – accused of heresy in the ‘80s. I have purchased the book in contention Wisdom’s Feast: Sophia in Study and Celebration. It will make its way to the church library. Our thanks especially to Lloyd and Shirley – it is an effort, not only physically, but also emotionally looking back on such events. We count ourselves privileged to hear characteristically lucid thoughts from the one at the centre of the maelstrom. Thank you too to Shirley who as usual was a marvellous support.
Talking books, Philip Garside was very helpful with books. Do remember him – he has some of the old Epworth Bookroom stock still available and can order books. www.pgpl.co.nz will get you in touch. He sends out a monthly newsletter.
I hope to see you all this Sunday when we commemorate the Transgender (Sun)Day of Remembrance. The actual TDOR is Monday 20 November. The Glamaphones are coming to sing for us, so it will be good to see a full house. Social Justice meets afterwards, but not Alastair Harray’s group as he has unexpectedly needed to be away for family reasons. So, see you there!
