Schumann’s delicious character pieces “Adagio and Allegro” were originally written for horn and titled “Romance and Allegro. “ The great Olivier Messiaen wrote his Theme and Variations as a loving wedding present for his violinist wife. And the powerful violin and piano sonata by Francis Poulenc was written upon the urging of legendary violinist Ginette Neveu and dedicated to the memory of Spanish poet Federico Lorca. While it retains aspects of the cabaret sound we associate with the party-loving Poulenc, it also features Spanish motifs and moments of real tragedy. Both the Messiaen and Poulenc are rarely heard masterpieces.
