Going live!

This week we will be live streaming the service, led by Rev Ross Scott, from St Andrew’s on The Terrace.

You can choose to join us at church, or you can watch from home.
Don’t forget it is daylight saving and we change back to winter time. See John’s notice below.

You will need to click on the link below which will take you to the St Andrew’s Youtube account.

You’ll recall that this is where we posted videos of our worship during lockdown March to May 2020.

We have sought some technical help over the last week, learned how to set up live stream and done some test runs on the same account.
But please note that because of our large and resonant auditorium the sound is pretty lively. We hope it will not be too difficult to hear.

If this works okay we will live stream Rev Dr Fei’s induction service. More about that next week.
Please note that this is a different technology from Zoom and the link looks different.

I have been reflecting on the new Art instillation on the water fount. The large word WELL NGTON with the missing “I”

The intent is for people to stand in the gap to replace the “I”

My reflections are around a society where the “I” is becoming ever more important. It is expressed on the wave of “Rights Movements”. In St Andrew’s, of all places, it is difficult to be critical of people’s rights. As a church we have a long history of working for people rights. In my time we have worked for children’s rights in the “anti smacking bill; gay rights in the Marriage Equity bill; women’s rights; trans rights; and the right for a living wage to name but a few.

But in recent weeks we have witnessed, near our door step, protests against individual rights being lost with mandates.

In a letter like this back in November Jim Cunningham wrote of his experience of the protesters where he asked where are their responsibilities. All rights come with responsibilities. I know that at the end of the day my rights as a gay man and ordained minister in the PCANZ only will come when the majority in the church exercise their responsibility, and out of respect for all members of the rainbow community, give me equal rights. It will be a joint effort. This is the way with rights. They are given out of respect and responsibility towards others.

So when I look at the large WELL NGTON on the water front I wonder if there is a different message. Are they saying we need to take the “I” out of Wellington.  Because when we do the “WE” is still there. And the “WE” is part of “WELL”. That is, when we see ourselves as “WE” then there is wellness.

We will begin a new stage in our life as a parish this week as we welcome Fei as our minister. May we do it as “WE”, working together.

Just a reflection.

During lock downs Mark and I had a number of meals via Skype and Zoom with friends, not like being together but better than not connecting at all.

I will be leading the service this week. It may be in person in the church or through ‘live streaming’ for those at home isolating, whether due to infection or to avoid infection. It will be a communion service so if you are at home, and it seems right to you, please have bread and wine/grape juice at hand to join with me as we partake in the family meal.
