E-NEWS FRIDAY 6TH JUNE 2025

In the calendar of church seasons, Pentecost Sunday  (Sunday 8 June this year) marks the beginning of the season of Pentecost, which follows the Easter season.
The word “Pentecost” comes from the Greek word “pentekoste, meaning “fiftieth”. This is because Pentecost comes 50 days (or the 7th Sunday) after Easter.  It commemorates the descent of the Holy Spirit on the apostles and is often referred to as the birth day of the Christian Church, because the apostles were emboldened to go out and spread the message of Jesus.
The Jewish feast of Pentecost (Shavuot) was primarily a thanksgiving harvest festival but later became associated with a remembrance of the Law given by God to Moses on Mount Sinai, and is celebrated fifty days after Passover.
Rev Reg Weeks will be leading the Service this Sunday and Pentecost and the pirit will be his theme.
The liturgical colour for Pentecost Sunday is red  – red for fire and spirit.  The banner/s will be red – my favourite colour. YOU are encouraged to wear or carry something red on Sunday to add to the festive feel of the day.
I include below the song/blessing that Shirley Murray wrote for me when I left Wellington in 2001 to take up a Chaplaincy /teaching role in Auckland.

Go Gently , Go Lightly’   Words © 2001 Shirley Erena Murray

Go gently, go lightly,                          Go singing, go bringing
go safe in the Spirit,                           the gifts of the Spirit,
live simply, don’t carry                        go hopefully searching
much more than you need:                for things that are true:
go trusting God’s goodness,               in living, in loving,
go spreading God’s kindness,             whatever befalls you,
stay centred on Jesus                          God keep you, God bless you
and where he will lead.                        in all that you do.
