E-NEWS FRIDAY 16TH MAY 2025

Kia ora tātou

This week Fei has arrived at Westminster College Cambridge, UK where she will spend the next 7 weeks as a Cheshunt Sabbatical Scholar. She posted some photos on Facebook following her arrival. It looks like a lovely place to be for a few weeks.

Thanks to all who attended the fundraising concert last Sunday. Quang gave a magnificent performance and as a friend said, you just wanted all of Wellington to hear this talented young man. He brought such energy, passion and technical prowess to his playing of Liszt that it was a privilege to witness it.

Last week we were granted the Building Consent by the Wellington City Council. This is another important milestone in the project to improve disability access. Our next fundraising event will be something totally different with a performance by We Dance, a disability dance group. We Dance is long established in Wellington and led by the remarkable Sumara Fraser. This will be a quite informal afternoon as we re-arrange the church to accommodate the dancers. They are a charming group who love to perform. Please do put an afternoon performance for 26 July in your diaries. We expect to hear from the Lottery Fund next month whether our application for a grant has been successful.

Paul Barber reports that St Andrew’s on The Terrace people were among the crowd of a couple of hundred who gathered in Naenae on Tuesday evening to show their support for the Living Wage for workers from Resene Paints. Workers told of their struggles to make ends meet, a common and distressing story in these times. If ever there is a time for a Living Wage it is now and not just at Resene Paints. The link below provides a full report.

Adelina, Germaine and Jemma in the office are having another extremely busy week with multiple bookings and activities. This evening, Friday 16 May Queen Margaret College are holding a fundraiser concert for Sophia Gittings, a promising young singer who graduated from QMC in 2024 and is shortly to head overseas to study. See below for details. She has a truly golden voice, and we wish her well in her next steps.

I have been thinking a lot this week about ‘Change and Renewal’ which is the theme for our service on 18 May. This post Easter time recalls the beginning of Christianity and the kind of new thinking that was required of the disciples. It must have been very hard for them. But at the same time the Easter story is a profound message about positive change and renewal. On Sunday I will be talking with Rev Dr Frank Hanson, one of our nonagenarians, about change and renewal throughout his career in the church. See you there!

Ngā mihi
