About the Concert
This special Recital, tries to enlighten for foreign audiences part of the history and content of
Argentine Music, through the two main aesthetic trends with particular languages and
compositional techniques involved in the production of this two great musicians.
They reflected the musical landscape of Argentina as a whole, from folk elements coming from the
immensity of Las Pampas and upholding the gaucho figure, to the Music of Buenos Aires and its
sound landscape.

Astor Piazzolla ( 1921 – 1992 )
Composer, arranger, and bandoneón virtuoso Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992) was inspired by
American jazz and concert music to revolutionise the Argentine tango. His “nuevo tango,” with its
intense melancholy and harmonic and rhythmic innovations, enraged traditionalistsbut became
highly influential among musicians and music lovers around the globe.
One of the world’s leading violinists and conductors, Gidon Kremer, says of Astor
Piazzolla’smusic “ You can sense through his music an experience that makes you at the same
time joyful and sad. And saying these two words, ‘joyful’ and ‘sad,’ I could say as well that the
striking combination of two extreme emotions go together in Astor’s music as they do in Franz
Schubert’s music. I know very few composers where you can feel it in such a passionate way.”

Alberto Ginastera
(1916 – 1983 )
In much of his music, Ginastera shows the influence of the Argentinean folk music and
dances which derive naturally from the Spanish, the native Indian and the African cultures
just like in the rest of Latin America. He seems to enjoy the obsessional character of the
malambo dance and seems to be inspired by the gaucho traditions.
In fact what is great about Ginastera is that he transcends the nationalistic notion even
when his music is telluric and a good amount of his works are close to the Argentinean
Pampas and South American music such as the genres from the Andean plateau.
