SUMMARY:The St Olaf Band
DESCRIPTION:Led by acclaimed composer\, conductor and St. Olaf alumnus Dr. Timothy Mahr\, the 126-year-old\, 94-member ensemble will present a widely varied program of primarily American music\, with a focus on the centennial celebration of Leonard Bernstein’s birth\, the music of John Williams\, and classic works from the wind band repertoire. Works featuring soloists and a good march or two will also be presented\, along with Mahr’s own award-winning composition\, The Soaring Hawk. \nThe St. Olaf Band is the oldest music organization at St. Olaf College in Northfield\, Minnesota\, a campus internationally renowned for its high caliber of musical ensembles as well as high marks in mathematics and the sciences. The band has toured nationally since 1904 and internationally since 1906\, when they performed a four-week\, 30-concert tour of Norway\, making them the first American collegiate band to tour Europe. The band has subsequently toured several times in Norway\, Great Britain\, Japan\, central Europe\, the Mediterranean\, and Mexico. \nDubbed “one of America’s preeminent bands” by The New Yorker\, the St. Olaf Band\, founded in 1891\, is an ensemble noted for superb musicianship. DESCRIPTION:Life is full of obvious and subtle forms of anxiety. We tend to consider these feelings as the opposite of equanimity… and then try to avoid our discomfort. In this evening talk\, Hogen Sensei suggests the possibility of a fresh perspective on our suffering\, through the willingness to experience all mental states with an open heart. Letting go of our avoidance of anxiety\, we discover that equanimity co-exists with the complete spectrum of our feelings. This is the realisation of countless spiritual practitioners. Hogen Sensei’s talk is suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners\, and includes time for questions and discussion. Entry by donation/koha.

DESCRIPTION:Half Day Workshop –  Why a spiritual practice is important.  Saturday 3 February\, 9am -12.15pm\, St Andrews on the Terrace.  \n\nThis workshop is a perfect entry-point for those new to Zen meditation (“zazen”)\, and for those seeking guidance from a Zen teacher in how to integrate Zen practice into all aspects of daily life.
