SUMMARY:Concert: Ghost Trio (Piano Trio)
DESCRIPTION:The trio consists of Monique Lapins (violin)\, also a member of the NZ String Quartet\, Ken Ichinose (cello) – associate principal with NZSO and Gabriela Glapska (piano). Named for Beethoven’s famous work for piano trio\, the Ghost Trio was founded in mid-2019 as one of Gabriela’s PhD recital projects. \nHaving quickly realised that they immensely enjoy playing together\, they decided to continue working as a trio. All three are accomplished soloists and chamber musicians with diverse backgrounds. They have toured nationwide for Chamber Music New Zealand’s Music Up Close series\, a tour where their performances were described as possessing “elan and unfailing attention to musical detail” Leon Gray – Tauranga Musica. \nFor this concert\, Ken Ichinose has become unavailable so will be replaced by Andrew Joyce\, Principal Cello of the NZSO. Two violin/piano duos are bookended by two great piano trios \nRobert Schumann\, Piano Trio No 1\, Op 63 (1847)\nLeonie Holmes\, “Dance of the Wintersmith” (2017)\nKaija Saariaho\, “Calices” (2009)\nMaurice Ravel\, Piano Trio in A minor (1914)

SUMMARY:Lunchtime concert - Quang Hong Luu\, solo piano
DESCRIPTION:The program starts with Franz Liszt’s Funérailles\, a dramatic work that captures the revolutionary spirit of the 1848 Hungarian Revolution. It is followed by Schumann’s Scenes from Childhood\, op. 15\, a collection of miniature works that expresses the more intimate and delicate charm of the piano repertoire. The final work is the monumental f-minor Sonata by Brahms\, a grand symphonic-scale work that mixes passion with nobility. \nLuu has won numerous prizes at competitions in Italy\, Germany and Japan and has performed with numerous orchestras\, including the Queensland Symphony Orchestra\, the Royal Philharmonic Concert Orchestra of England\, the Wuhan Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra\, and the Metropolitan Orchestra of Australia. He has given recitals in Australia\, Vietnam\, Japan\, China\, Malaysia\, the USA and France. \nHe will soon release a CD of Liszt’s 12 Transcendental Studies under the Rattle recording label. Quang is now completing a Doctor of Musical Arts at\nthe New Zealand School of Music in New Zealand under the guidance of Dr Jian Liu.

SUMMARY:Upcoming concert: Jack!@80
DESCRIPTION:Sat 12 October 2024\, 7pm St Andrew’s on the Terrace\, Wellington (Entry by koha)\nA concert to celebrate the achievements of Jack Body composer\, impresario\, teacher \nJack would have turned 80 this October\, and a number of those who worked with him\, learned from him\, and were inspired by him\, are putting on a concert of his music\, to celebrate his extraordinary achievements.\nThe programme\, in the welcoming surroundings of St Andrew’s on the Terrace\, will include some of his most beautiful compositions\, performed by singers\, pianists\, percussionists\, string players\, a flautist and a guitarist.\nThe concert celebrates the life and work of one of our most original and gifted composers. His operas\, choral\, orchestral\, electro-acoustic and chamber works are internationally acclaimed and recorded.\nIt marks his achievements in mounting large-scale events\, such as the Sonic Circuses of the 1970s and the more recent multicultural events. In developing these events he greatly strengthened cultural links with Indonesia\, China\, Cambodia and throughout Asia\, and his achievements in this are celebrated in those countries to a greater extent than they are celebrated here.\nSuch an influential life\, such creative genius\, is a rare and precious taonga\, and we invite you to join us in recognising his achievements.\nWe look forward to seeing you at this very special 80th-birthday concert!\nYou’re welcome to join us for supper in the hall afterwards too.\nRSVP & enquiries to Robert Oliver: chant4robert@gmail.com

SUMMARY:Lunchtime Concert: Katrin Eickhorst\, recorder and Michael Stewart\, harpsichord
DESCRIPTION:Katrin Eickhorst\, recorders\, and Michael Stewart\, organ and harpsichord\, present solo and chamber music works from the Renaissance and the Baroque\, including works by Fontana\, van Eyck (Staeps)\, Frescobaldi and Telemann.\nThe highlight of the programme is Carl Philip Emmanuel Bach’s Sonata in g minor for flute or violine and obligato harpsichord. One of the gems of 18th century literature\, it was attributed to Johann Sebastian Bach as his BWV 1020. But recent research suggests it to be a work of Johann Sebastian’s son Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach.
