SUMMARY:Stringendo - Wellington Children's Orchestra
DESCRIPTION:Stringendo was formed in 2015 and consists of string players aged from 9-14 from the Wellington region\, conducted by Donald Maurice. Its primary focus is music from the Baroque period\, to equip the players with an understanding of the playing style of the time\, to develop sight-reading skills\, and to prepare them for roles in full symphony orchestras. Many past members have gone on to join Wellington Sinfonietta\, Wellington Youth Orchestra\, the National Secondary Schools Orchestra and the National Youth Orchestra. Some of the original members are now studying performance at university. Keeping going during Covid-19 alert levels has been challenging but in 2021 Stringendo participated in the Strings for Africa concert with piano soloist Diedre Irons. SUMMARY:Uriele - original compositions for solo piano
DESCRIPTION:Uriele is a classical pianist\, a composer and a clown. She is also a fully trained psychologist holding a Masters Degree from a German University. Born in Munich and brought up in beautiful Bavaria\, she fell in love with New Zealand and since 1996 made it her home. \nThe music Uriele writes is deeply emotive\, sometimes sad and melancholic\, sometimes quirky and joyful\, sometimes playful like a clown. Through mindfulness and presence which she has been practising for many years of Sacred Clowning she found a way to process her feelings intuitively. She has recorded three albums with her own piano music: Soul Moons (2012)\, Inner Orbit (2014) and In Between (2017) \nThe music falls into the genre of minimalism\, driven by simple chords and repetitive patterns\, and at the same time offering great variety of style. Having been trained as a classical pianist for 12 years\, the influence of classicism can be noticed in the structure and the rich melodic content of some pieces that seem to tell stories. There are jaunty dance pieces bringing waltz\, ragtime\, shades of folk music and Jewish syncopated dance rhythms into play. Rhythm has become a strong aspect in her most recent compositions through her connection to traditional marimba music. DESCRIPTION:Wellington-based duo Will King (baritone) and Nick Kovacev (piano) present Winterreise\, one of the final compositions of Franz Schubert. An intimate and emotional experience\, this song cycle takes the audience on a journey through the snowy wilderness\, detailing the love\, loss\, and eventual broken heart of a young man travelling alone. \n  \nWritten after Schubert’s diagnosis of syphilis\, the music captures all the grace\, longing\, and horror that only the doomed can truly appreciate. Winterreise is the culminating masterpiece of one of the greatest song writers ever to have lived. The twenty-four songs explore loss\, rage\, despair\, transcendental beauty and sarcastic humour in a rich and detailed musical landscape. \n  \nTickets are $30 for adults and $15 for students. His operatic roles include the title role in Monteverdi’s L’orfeo\, Count Almaviva in The Marriage of Figaro\, Sam in NZ Opera’s premiere of Gareth Farr’s The Bone Feeder\, Lorenzo in Bellini’s I Capuleti e I Montecchi\, Zaretsky in Tchaikovsky’s Eugene Onegin\, and Valens in a staged production of Handel’s Theodora. Will would have understudied the role of Orpheus in NZ Opera’s 2021 production of Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice had it not been for the recent Delta lockdowns. He plans to move to Germany in mid-2022 to audition and do further study. Will was a 2019 Emerging Artist with NZ Opera and would like to acknowledge the continued support of the Dame Malvina Major Foundation. \n  \nNicholas Kovacev is a Serbian-New Zealand pianist from Wellington\, who in 2020 completed his Bachelor of Music with Honours at the New Zealand School of Music under Dr Jian Liu and David Barnard. Upon graduating he was engaged as an Artist teacher and Accompanist at the school\, and he is active in performing both solo and collaborative recitals\, around the country. In 2022 he will travel to Berlin for the Dramatic Voices Program (this was originally scheduled for 2020 and disrupted by the pandemic\, alongside an internship with the RNZ Ballet). Despite artistic differences and family discord\, the quartet have managed to stay together and have performed live at public venues such as Te Papa\, and at Wellington’s Eat\, Drink\, Play Festival.
