SUMMARY:Uriele - original compositions for solo piano
DESCRIPTION:Uriele is a classical pianist\, a composer and a clown. She is also a fully trained psychologist holding a Masters Degree from a German University. Born in Munich and brought up in beautiful Bavaria\, she fell in love with New Zealand and since 1996 made it her home. \nThe music Uriele writes is deeply emotive\, sometimes sad and melancholic\, sometimes quirky and joyful\, sometimes playful like a clown. Through mindfulness and presence which she has been practising for many years of Sacred Clowning she found a way to process her feelings intuitively. She has recorded three albums with her own piano music: Soul Moons (2012)\, Inner Orbit (2014) and In Between (2017) \nThe music falls into the genre of minimalism\, driven by simple chords and repetitive patterns\, and at the same time offering great variety of style. Having been trained as a classical pianist for 12 years\, the influence of classicism can be noticed in the structure and the rich melodic content of some pieces that seem to tell stories. There are jaunty dance pieces bringing waltz\, ragtime\, shades of folk music and Jewish syncopated dance rhythms into play. Rhythm has become a strong aspect in her most recent compositions through her connection to traditional marimba music. Audience limited by alert level. \n  \nProgramme detail: 10 November Duets and Trios for Voice and Piano

SUMMARY:TAIORO - Chamber Music with Poetry\, Viola\, Cello and Piano
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the exciting opening concert of the 2022 St Andrew’s on the Terrace Lunchtime Series\, featuring the debut of new chamber music group TAIORO\, a combination of poetry by Sharn Maree Cassady with music performed by Donald Maurice (viola) and Inbal Megiddo (cello). Compositions are by New Zealand composers Anthony Ritchie\, Alfred Hill and Douglas Lilburn\, as well as the premiere of David Hamilton’s “Avec Amour”\, set to a poem by Sherry Grant. \nTAIORO is an ensemble established in 2021 to create and perform a niche repertoire combining poetry and music by Aotearoa New Zealand authors and composers. This collaboration of spoken word poet\, violist\, cellist and pianist embraces our diverse backgrounds and the whenua which we call home. \nTaioro – the dynamics of sound\, one of the main elements of music\, namely the heaviness or lightness of the sound. \nTai – the tide. Representing the ebbs and flows of tangaroa and the energy that we hold. \nOro – to resound or resonate. Also the kupu used for a musical note. \n*Seating is limited to 100 persons. Mask and vaccine pass requirements apply as per government requirements. Be early to avoid disappointment. \n  \nProgramme details : 2022-02-16 Taioro

SUMMARY:Liam Furey\, solo piano: "Sensitivity versus Gallantry"
DESCRIPTION:Join us at St. Andrew’s on the Terrace for “Sensitivity versus Gallantry: the struggle between simplicity and complexity.” This programme expresses the ongoing challenge of balancing both simple and complex kinds of musical expression. In this concert\, two seemingly “simple” pieces are paired with two more eccentric works composed within a similar period\, to highlight the contrast between these two kinds of expression. This will be followed by a finale with John Psathas’s thrilling “Jettatura.” \nLiam Furey was taught piano at the age of nine\, discovering classical music at eleven\, and was inspired to work in classical music. Liam started lessons with pianist/composer Gillian Bibby\, won the Senior Composition Prize for Chamber Music NZ’s 2016 Secondary School Contest\, and received the LTCL (Distinction) and LMusNZ Piano diplomas in 2017. Now in his Honours year for Classical Piano and Composition at the New Zealand School of Music\, Liam has learnt piano under Jian Liu\, composition under Michael Norris. Liam has been a frequent finalist and winner in various competitions at the NZSM\, composed orchestra works for the NZSM Orchestra and NZSO\, and is a co-founder of the Sounds of Te Kōkī concert series\, which solely premiers new works by NZSM composition students. Liam aspires to learn and create eclectic programmes that highlight newer ideas of musical expression for his audiences. \nProgramme: \nLUDWIG VAN BEETHOVEN: Piano Sonata No.20 in G Major\, Op.49\, No.2 \nC.P.E. BACH: Fantasia in C Major\, H.284 \nMAURICE RAVEL: Minuet from “Le Tombeau de Couperin” \nPIERRE BOULEZ: Douze Notations (1945) \nJOHN PSATHAS: Jettatura (1999) \nSeating is limited to 100 persons. Mask and vaccine pass requirements apply as per government requirements. Be early to avoid disappointment.

SUMMARY:The Kugels - Anna Gawn (voice)\, Ross Harris (accordion)\, Robin Perks (violin)\, Debbie Rawson (clarinets)\, Nick Tipping (bass)
DESCRIPTION:Take 3 former NZSO players\, an Arts Laureate composer\, a bass player of renown\, a charismatic singer and you have the Kugels! The ensemble has been together for 10 years now\, and has completed nationwide tours for Arts on Tour NZ\, Chamber Music New Zealand\, and performed as guest artists at several NZ festivals. \nWith passion and sensitivity\, the Kugels play traditional Klezmer music and original works by their in-house Arts Laureate kiwi composer/accordionist Ross Harris. Klezmer music is the folk music of Jewish people from Eastern and Central Europe and speaks eloquently for the plight of oppressed minorities everywhere. The music is wild\, passionate and haunting and makes you want to dance. \nThe lineup introduces their newest member\, Nick Tipping\, whose innovative and imaginative bass adds further texture to this vibrant ensemble. Another recent addition is Anna Gawn\, whose unique voice takes the music into yet another dimension. The Kugels are on fire! \nMasks are needed\, but vaccine passes are not required for this venue \nProgramme details: 2022-05-25 Kugels
