On Sunday March 4, St Andrews on The Terrace paid tribute to their Theologian in Residence.  This is the text of the appreciation which was presented along with a pounamu pendant to Sir Lloyd and Lady Shirley.

In Appreciation

Rev Prof Sir Lloyd George Geering ONZGNZMCBE

26 February 1918 – 26 February 2018 … and onward.

Sir Lloyd, as Minister of St Andrew’s on the Terrace, Parish Council and Congregation we express to you our deep appreciation of your work, ministry and friendship.  We acknowledge too the support Lady Shirley is to you in your life and work.  You are both much loved members at St Andrew’s on The Terrace.

Sir Lloyd, you are greatly valued too by many in the the wider church, around New Zealand, and throughout the world as one who speaks and writes on theology and life clearly and succinctly, with intelligent perception and wisdom.

For this appreciative audience, you have reinterpreted theology in a way which is accessible to twenty first century followers of spirituality and religion.  Your words have been a relief and guide to many.  You speak and write intentionally, but also with grace.

You are deeply valued as an author, commentator, preacher, Professor, lecturer, panel member, teacher, Principal, colleague in discussion, Honorary Associate Minister and member of St Andrew’s on The Terrace faith community.  Many count you as a friend. We appreciate your seminal contribution to the St Andrew’s Trust for the Study of Religion and Society. You are always very supportive of parish life and ministry on The Terrace.

Your remarkable ability to keep your eyes wide open to the developments in our world as they have rolled through the 100 years of your life thus far means what you say and write is highly relevant to the world in which we live as real and vulnerable human beings.   Not only have you noticed changes during the 20th and 21st centuries, but you name their significance for mind, body and spirit and for the environment around us.

We wish you both every happiness as you celebrate Lloyd’s 100 years on this earth.  We thank you deeply for the service you have together given church, university and society in New Zealand and across the globe.
