SKY
Blue skies smiling at me
Nothing but blue skies do I see
Blue birds singing a song
Nothing but blue skies from now on

Irving Berlin’s “Blue Skies” may strike a chord with some readers of a certain age! When everything is going fine we often see it in terms of fine weather and blue skies. But when things go wrong we often see it in terms of “Stormy Weather”!

Isn’t it interesting how the sky influences our moods? Sunny days make us feel good but if they go on too long we grow hot and tired and weary. We and our world dry out in the heat and in the extremes we have droughts and forest fires. Then we look for grey cloudy days with the hope of rain to quench the land and put out the fires; cooler days when we can get a break from the heat. But there are extremes there too – torrential rain and storms that bring flooding and high wind that breaks and destroys. We also stand in wonder at a magnificent sunset and get out the raincoats when the sky is red in the morning. Chicken Licken got into a right panic when he thought the sky was falling!
Scientists might want us to look at things differently. The sky that we see as a blue dome during the day disappears when darkness comes and we can see further out into Space. And the more we read and explore the more complex it all becomes. We sometimes say that “the sky’s the limit” meaning there are lots more opportunities than we first imagine within that dome. But after seeing photos of Space taken by the Hubble telescope we see that beyond “the sky” there are no limits and boundaries, new stars are forming and dying exploding and dancing in a living creative process. Wow!
Unlike our ancestors, who imagined that they lived in a three-decker universe where the sky above was the outer limit, we might view the sky as the gateway to unlimited possibilities. To be able to look beyond the sky is to stand in awe and wonder at the sheer immensity and beauty of a Universe of which we are such a small part.
September is “The Season of Creation” in our liturgical year. This Sunday Susan will be leading us through some thoughts and experiences of “Sky”. We will celebrate Communion during the Gathering.
