WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE

Today on Land Sunday, Sonia Groes Petrie talks about the importance of soil and of treating it well.

St Andrew's on The Terrace

ORDER OF SERVICE

10 September 2017

Pentecost 14

Creation 2 – Land Sunday

WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE
Wherever you are on your faith's journey,
wherever you have come from and wherever you are going to,
whatever you believe, whatever you do not believe, you are welcome here.
Please join in the congregational responses printed in bold italics.
Please stand if you are able, for the hymns and the offering prayer.
We usually sing the hymns without announcement.
To use the loop system in the church, turn your hearing aids on to the appropriate setting.
Printed copies of the reflection are available at the back of the church for people with extreme hearing loss. For others they can be picked up at the end of the Gathering.

Please note your nearest fire exit.
The church and hall have been earthquake strengthened. In an earthquake: drop, cover and hold.

GATHERING
We invite the country to worship with us:
wild flowers and mysterious mushrooms,
swirling grasses and golden wattle.
We join the land as it trembles before God:
with tremors and earthquakes,
whirlwinds and volcanoes.
We invite the farmlands to sing with us:
wheat fields, orchards and vineyards,
kauri, rimu, gardens and wetlands.
We join with all the fauna of the fields in praising God:
sheep and goats, cows and dogs,
possums, hawks and magpies.
We invite the ground to stir deep below:
beetles and worms preparing our food.
We celebrate the song of the soil!
Sing, soil, sing!
We celebrate the song of the soil!
Sing, soil, sing!

PROCESSIONAL HYMN ‘All creatures of our God now sing’
Tune: WOV3 © Moon & Musky Music 2002.
All creatures of our God, let’s sing!
Lift up your voice and let it ring,
Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou burning sun with golden beam,
Thou silver moon with softer gleam!
O praise God! O praise God!
Alleluia! Alleluia! Alleluia!
Thou rushing wind that art so strong
Ye clouds that sail in Heaven along,
O praise God! Alleluia!
Thou rising moon, in praise rejoice,
Ye lights of evening, find a voice! Refrain

Dear mother earth, who day by day
Unfoldest blessings on our way,
O praise God! Alleluia!
The flowers and fruits that in thee grow,
Let them God’s glory also show. Refrain

Let all things their creator bless,
And worship God in humbleness,
O praise God! Alleluia!
Praise the Creator and the Son,
and praise the Spirit, Three in One! Refrain

WELCOME
Kia ora tatou. Kia ora.

PRAYER OF LAMENT AND CONFESSION
We lament and confess
that we have become alienated from Earth
clearing much of the life from the land in our garden planet.
We are sorry.
We have killed living soils with excessive chemicals.
We have turned fertile fields into lifeless salt plains.
We have cleared rich lands of wild life.
We have swallowed Earth’s resources in selfish cities.
We are sorry.
We are sorry. We are sorry.

ASSURANCE
Your confessions are heard and your sins against the land are forgiven
May we learn to love Earth and return to Earth as our home.
I invite you to come home to Earth by rejoicing in the land.
Shalom! Shalom! We are coming home!
Adapted from Season of Creation worship resources www.seasonofcreation.com

A WORLD PRAYER
We are birthed from energy and stardust
flung into the world with all the ‘glory of the power that is love.’
May we creatively furnish the world
with grace and love, beauty and justice.
May our actions together provide what the world needs.
May we share with others what we have produced
so all can grow and flourish.
May the knots which bind us be unravelled,
as we release ourselves and others from
the tangle of past mistakes.
May we remain true to purpose,
alert to the all the possibilities of such a time as this.
In all we do, may faith, hope and love abide,
with the greatest of these being love.
So may it be AMEN

LIGHTING THE RAINBOW ROOM CANDLE

TIME WITH CHILDREN Ellen Murray

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions
and have fun together. We bless you. Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE
Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.” Or, simply saying “Hello” is a good idea. Also feel free to simply observe if you wish!

INTRODUCTION Susan Jones

THE WORD IN TEXTS Pat Booth

Hebrew Bible Deuteronomy 34: 1-5

Gospel Matthew 4: 1-11

Contemporary Reading The Earth Bible Principles
By Norman Habel & the Earth Bible Team

The Earth Bible principles were developed largely by the Earth Bible Team in Adelaide in consultation with writers in Ecology. They are worded in such a way to facilitate dialogue between biblical scholars and ecologists. The articles in The Earth Bible reflect ways in which various scholars seek to read the text from the perspective of Earth, taking into account one or more of these principles…

1. The Principle of Intrinsic Worth
The universe, the Earth and all its components have intrinsic worth/value.
2. The Principle of Inter-connectedness
The Earth is a community of inter-connected living things which are mutually dependent on each other for life and survival.
3. The Principle of Voice
The Earth is a living entity capable of raising its voice in celebration and against injustice.
4. The Principle of Purpose
The universe, the Earth and all its components are part of a dynamic cosmic design within which each piece has a place in the overall goal of that design.
5. The Principle of Mutual Custodianship
The Earth is a balanced and diverse domain where responsible custodians can function as partners with, rather than rulers over, the Earth to sustain its balance and diversity.
6. Principle of Resistance
The Earth and its components not only suffer from injustices at the hands of humans, but actively resist them in the struggle for justice.

RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture, for the Word among us,
for the Word within us, we give thanks

REFLECTION ‘Sustaining our soils’ Sonia Groes-Petrie

VISUAL REFLECTION

HYMN In our world we find delight
Words Susan Jones vss1, 3 © 2016, v 2, © 2017)
Music © 2016 Vivien Chiu
In our world we find delight
For creation, day and night
Brings us solace, joy;
Spirit grows, refreshes, gleams
as the earth fuels richer dreams
just by being here;
May this beauty never end
May this solace always be here
May the human race take notice
And show divine compassion.
Land provides our standing place,
hills through which the rivers trace,
give us space to be;
Ground which holds us, gives us base,
needs our care, through all our days
so it will survive
May this place continue standing
May this earth continue holding
May our feet be ever grounded
Held in divine compassion

It’s a mystery who made this -
evolution, hand-made care -
multiple ideas.
But it’s not a mystery who
Needs to care for green and blue -
We have all been charged
To make sure this never ends
That this beauty does remain here
That the human race takes notice
And shows divine compassion

A STATEMENT ABOUT LAND AND ABOUT US
Land is turangawaewae, a standing place
where we yearn that all will know dignity and be free

Land is active beneath our feet, a living creature
of browns and greens and greys, the result
of centuries of Earth’s moving and shaping.

Healthy, growing land harbours other living creatures
worming and creeping through soil and under rock and
crevices smaller than the eye can see.

We may try to possess the Land but it moves and wriggles,
flows and erodes, cracks and weathers, quakes and subsides;
belonging, ultimately, to none of us though we might
buy and lease, farm it and build on it, move it and mine it.

Land is this planet’s skin. May we work to ensure
it always breathes clean air and is washed with clean waters,
so it can be forever well.
May we be content in our own skin, may we breathe
in the breath of God, be washed in the Spirit
and stand together forever in Love.

OFFERING PRAYER (said together)
In this land we are blessed with beauty and produce, space and a geography that brings delight and harmony to the spirit. In gratitude we bring money to continue the work of this community and food for those who need it more than we. May each bring blessing in their turn.
So may it be Amen
We recognise and bless the gifts brought to the table, and those which wing
their way electronically from our banks to the church’s account.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Sue McRae

CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of Cambodia and Christian World Service Partner Church World Service Cambodia and their work with communities to deliver food security, health services, savings and credit schemes, and training of volunteers to provide village services.
In New Zealand, we remember those who work this election season as candidates, members of all political parties and all voters. Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of Milson Combined Church and St Alban’s Presbyterian Church, Palmerston North.

PRAYER FOR ST ANDREW’S on card

HYMN AA 26 ‘Come to our land’
Words: © Shirley Murray Music © Colin Gibson
Come to our land, come to our hearts,
Spirit of peace, Spirit of truth,
bring in the spring, the hope and the green,
Spirit of growth and Spirit of youth.
And all our people will sing together:
Wairua Tapu, holy your name,
there's one great Spirit in all creation,
one great Spirit of God!
Come to our land, come to our hearts,
Spirit of life, breath of new birth,
teach us to care for water and air,
nourish the seed and cherish the earth. Refrain

Come to our land, come to our hearts,
Spirit of bush, Spirit of bird,
speak to the soul of Aotearoa
joy in your world and joy in your Word. Refrain

BLESSING

SUNG AMEN

ST ANDREW’S COMMUNITY NOTICES

ST ANDREW'S GARDEN
It's almost time for us to begin planting for another growing season in our little garden at the rear of the car park area. We will meet after morning tea today (10 September) in the hall/kitchen area to discuss what we would like to grow & when we'll have our next working bee. Anyone keen to join us are very welcome. Please contact Sonia Ph 027 4051302 or email soniapetrie@gmail.com if you can't come to this meeting but would like to be involved.

SOCIAL JUSTICE
This group will meet after the Sunday Gathering on Sunday 17 September around a Peace Theme.

HEALTH AND SAFETY PLEASE BE AWARE
The health and safety of everyone in our community is important. It is good that lots of people remain after the Gathering for morning tea. Here we have a lively mixture of hot drinks, elderly people, children and a number of people in a small space. Please watch for children. We have supplied areas to sit and enjoy your conversation. Please feel free to move chairs in the last couple of rows to make more room. ‘All” are welcome, let’s keep ‘all’ safe! Susan

SPIRITED CONVERSATIONS
Tuesday 19 September from 6.15pm in Conference Room 1 & 2 of the St Andrew’s Centre. Please RSVP via the blue plastic folder at the back of the church.
Speaker Trish Harris. A circular journey—Body and Soul
In The Walking Stick Tree, Trish Harris’s memoir, she tells the story of growing up and living with acute arthritis. Threaded through this is Trish’s Catholic upbringing and the need in her adult years to find a spirituality that helped her connect with her body in a life-giving way.
Using examples from her life and others’ writings, Trish will talk about justice, spirituality, disability and the dangers of inspiration. If there’s time she’ll show some pics from her travels in her motorised wheelchair on the Otago Rail Trail with friends a few years ago—a pilgrimage of sorts! This photo is a sneak peek….
Bio: Trish is an active member of the New Zealand Disability, Spirituality and Faith Network. In 2014 she co-ordinated the production of a key disability resource for faith communities called the Creating Welcoming Churches. As well as being a writer, in recent years Trish trained as a spiritual director. Trish’s second book is being launched in mid-October. My Wide White Bed is a collection of poems that began during an extended stay in an orthopaedic ward. Poet and GP Glenn Colquhoun says of it: ‘…It shows how crucial imagination is to being well…’

CHRISTMAS BAKING ORDERS
Maxine Cunningham writes; there are order forms and photographs for 3 sizes of Christmas Cakes ($12, $25, $42), 2 kinds of shortbread (plain and Christmas cardamom - $5 for 6) and Gingerbread at the back of the church.
