WELCOME TO ST ANDREW’S ON THE TERRACE

GATHERING
As autumn flames into life
We celebrate the Spirit’s fire
Falling on the earth, leaves carpet the ground
Falling on the church, the Spirit warms each heart
Spirit of truth and power
Spirit of light and love
Come, Spirit, Come
THE SPIRIT HAS COME!
Now again in your different languages
THE SPIRIT HAS COME

PROCESSIONAL HYMN ‘Send us the fire’

Chorus Send us the fire of your justice, Send us the rains of your love;
Come, send us the Spirit, breathe life in your people,
and we shall be people of God.

Call us to be your compassion, Teach us the song of your love;
Give us hearts that sing, give us deeds that ring,
Make us ring with the song of your love. Chorus

Call us to learn of your mercy, Teach us the way of your peace;
Give us hearts that feel, give us hands that heal,
Make us walk in the way of your peace. Chorus

Call us to answer oppression, Teach us the fire of your truth;
Give us yearning souls, 'til your justice rolls,
Make us burn with the fire of your truth. Chorus

WELCOME
Kia ora tatou.
Kia ora.

PRAYER
Spirit-power colours our lives with light;
We celebrate the crimson red of fire,
energy captured in bright yellows, warmth and brilliance in orange;
we celebrate the boldness of blue
the significance of purple;
All fire’s colours present in our lives;
Lighting up corners,
warming cold places;
We rejoice that Spirit is with us this day;
Thanks be given for
fire in our belly,
energy in our hearts,
vitality brought to our soul.
So may it be. Amen

BLESSING THE CHILDREN (All stand)
We send you to the Rainbow Room programme to hear stories, ask questions and have fun together.
We bless you. Amen.

PASSING THE PEACE
Feel free to pass the peace with those nearby or move to greet others further away. Passing the peace consists of shaking hands and saying “Peace be with you.” The response is “Peace be with you” or just “And with you.” Or, simply saying ‘Hello” is a good idea. Also feel free to simply observe if you wish!

THE WORD IN TEXTS Jennifer Bush-Daumec

Hebrew Bible selected verses from Genesis 1

The Epistle Acts 2: 1-15

Contemporary reading ‘Pentecost’ from “Sounding the Seasons”
by Malcolm Guite
Today we feel the wind beneath our wings,
Today the hidden fountain flows and plays,
Today the church draws breath at last and sings,
As every flame becomes a tongue of praise.
This is the feast of Fire, Air and Water,
Poured out and breathed and kindled into Earth.…

The right words come today in their right order
And every word spells freedom and release,
Today the gospel crosses every border,
All tongues are loosened by the Prince of Peace.
Today the lost are found in his translation,
Whose mother-tongue is love, in every nation.

RESPONSE
For the Word in scripture,
for the Word among us,
for the Word within us,
we give thanks.

HYMN IN RESPONSE CH4 593 ‘She sits like a bird’
Words & Music by Graham Maule, John L Bell
© 1988 WGRG, Iona Community, Glasgow, Scotland, G2 3DH (Admin by Willow Publishing Pty Ltd)
She sits like a bird, brooding on the waters,
hovering on the chaos of the world's first day;
She sighs and she sings, mothering creation,
waiting to give birth to all the Word will say.

She wings over earth, resting where she wishes,
lighting close at hand or soaring through the skies;
She nests in the womb, welcoming each wonder,
nourishing potential hidden to our eyes.

She dances in fire, startling her spectators,
waking tongues of ecstasy where dumbness reigned;
She weans and inspires all whose hearts are open,
nor can she be captured, silenced or restrained.

For she is the Spirit, one with God in essence,
gifted by the Saviour in eternal love;
She is the key opening the scriptures,
enemy of apathy and heavenly dove.

AFFIRMATION from ‘A Trinity I can live with’
by Abby Smith
I love beauty
I love rhythm and music, a flute, a saxophone, a madrigal, reggae
I love buildings, and sculpture, and paintings, and china
I love weaving and tapestry, paper and books
I love soup and crunchy vegetables and chocolate and hot bread
I love kindness and care, medicine and research, ideas and dreams,
invention
I love faith, belief, trust, and respect
I love community, I love family,
I love reunions and surprise parties, celebrations and balloons
I love beauty, Spirit.

And God made a wonderful world,
And Jesus loved the people there,
And the Spirit helped them to create beauty,
And it was enough.

PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Tony Kirby

CIRCLE OF PRAYER
We think today of the people of Estonia, Latvia and Lithuania and the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Estonia and Latvia. In New Zealand, we remember those in Parliament, and today we name Jenny Salesa (Manukau East electorate) and Alastair Scott (Wairarapa electorate). Here in the Central Presbytery, we pray for the leaders and people of Kapiti Uniting Parish.

HYMN AA 109 ‘O the Spirit she moves on the water’
Words © 1993 Cecily Sheehy, , arr. Jenny Bennett
(Admin. by The NZ Hymnbook Trust)
O the Spirit she moves on the water,
and her breathing is felt far and near,
O the Spirit she gave us a birth and a life.
Do you see, do you hear?
And she sweeps us all up in the flame of her love, she is here!
La la la ….

O the Spirit she’s dark and she’s brooding,
unpredictable, wild without fear,
She can roar with the power of a hurricane wind.
Do you see, do you hear?
And her silence becomes so profound we forget she is there.
La la la ….

O the Spirit, the great liberator,
living energy, given to all
Till at last we surrender our life to her –
and we hear and we see:
Being one with creation and life and the Spirit are we.
La la la….

BLESSING
May the divine breath stream within us.
May the divine breath renew us.
May the divine breath invigorate us,
so we may walk with confidence into this world.
Amen. traditional Jewish blessing
