Foodbank Goes Green
Last year it was the Bookfair and now it’s the Foodbank’s turn to use fully recyclable bags.
Downtown Community Ministry’s Foodbank has started using entirely eco friendly bags to package food parcels and frozen bread.
The bags are being sourced from Kapiti coast supplier Ayrpak who distribute the Eco Pal range of biodegradable plastic bags.
These bags are said to decompose in around 40 days.
The decision was made after DCM staff realised just how many plastic bags were being used every week.
Community Worker DJ Manuel says, “We do encourage the clients to bring in their own bags to use and many of them have done that for a long time.
DCM Director Stephanie McIntyre says, “We made the decision last year for the Bookfair to use these bags so it’s natural to extend the practise across the organisation.
“While still produced from petro-chemical sources this product is far superior to most of the bags on the market”.
