For many years DCM has had a tradition of identifying gaps in social services in Wellington and working with others to set up organizations to fill them. Past projects DCM has been involved with have included the Wellington People’s Centre, Vincent’s Art Workshops and the Clean Team (which provided employment for mental health consumers and is now defunct) and, even earlier, the Refugee and Migrant Service and the Home Tutor Scheme.
While DCM has served as an umbrella organisation for many of these projects in their initial phases, the ultimate aim has always been for them to become stand alone organisations.
DCM is currently involved with the following projects:
- The Inner City Project , which coordinates the activities of organisations providing mental health services (04-389-3788 icmhg@xtra.co.nz);
- Easy Access Housing, which provides short term accommodation for mental health consumers and works with them to find permanent accommodation.04-499-1064 housing@easyaccess.org.nz
- The Community Accounts Mentoring Project which assists and advises community organisations on how to manage their accounts efficiently and effectively.
DCM is also represented on the Night Shelter Trust and has been very involved in plans for the shelter's refurbishment.
